This evening, the joined orchestra communities of The Cleveland Orchestra and the New World Symphony raised $72,000 to contribute to Partners in Health for their efforts to help the victims of the tragic earthquake in Haiti. The orchestras performed at the home of the New World Symphony, Lincoln Theatre in Miami Beach.
Musicians of the two orchestras organized the event just last week. The concert began with NWS musicians and conductor Teddy Abrams performing Barber's Adagio for Strings, followed by a moment of silence. The NWS musicians continued with music of Elgar.
Before the Cleveland Orchestra musicians and Music Director Franz Welser-Möst took the stage, members of both orchestras collected further donations from the audience in the theatre. The Cleveland Orchestra musicians performed Beethoven's Leonore Overture No. 3. After intermission, both groups of musicians gathered on stage for a performance of Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony.
